The cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, and some municipalities of Northern Mindanao have been ravaged by flash floods brought by Typhoon Sendong (international name: Washi) after 12 hours of nonstop raining on Friday. The pounding rain caused major rivers in the area to swell up and fatally tear down homes and properties. The death toll is now at 685 according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

Xavier University quickly responded to the disaster by setting up Operation: Tabang Sendong to provide assistance to the affected families in and outside Cagayan de Oro. The relief operation accepts cash, food, clothing, medicines, toiletries, utencils and other donations and delivers them to the victims.
